We wanted to fire some questions out our lovely teachers, asking them about their thoughts on all things musical!
Let's hear from Louise who is our specialist Oboe teacher here at My Music in Berkshire...
When did you start playing your instrument?
I started playing when I was 8 after discovering my mothers oboe in the loft and begging for lessons (which didn't take long)
Do you play any other instruments?
Yes, Piano was my first instrument and I took up Saxophone in college. I also dabbled with the clarinet at University, and of course I also play the Cor Anlglais.
Whats your favourite thing about teaching?
Just one favourite thing about teaching? Probably the moment with a student when they make a breakthrough with their playing.
Where is the most exciting place you have played your instrument?
Holding the principal oboe chair for an opera performance in the Royal Albert Hall.
How do you feel about exams?
Exams are a good basis to determine what playing ability a person is at, they are good milestones for young children in the early grades but not so much for adults starting out. I would take an adult students preferences of course into account if they wish to do graded exams but they aren't required.
Whats the difference between teaching adults and children?
I don't find much difference as I treat my students all as equals, I am not grade focused I am progress focused. This guides which steps I need to take to help my student in the right direction so they can achieve their musical goals.
Do you want to get started?
We offer flexible lessons, that take place in our teaching rooms at Dawkes Music in Maidenhead. Lessons are scheduled between 9.30-5.30pm. Our pupils usually come weekly as we find this enables better progress, although some do some every other week and for more specialist queries and pro players they come every so often.
We hope you enjoy reading these quick fire Q&As and it might encourage you to take the leap into "giving it a go". All our teachers are professional, love what they do and have a passion for making music.
