Have you ever wondered what it would actually be like to learn a musical instrument, often people say "I haven't got the time" , "I'm too old" or "It's too late for me to start"...
We thought it would be a good idea for our pupils to answer some questions that you may have, and you can hear from them directly what's involved in learning a musical instrument.
Let's hear from Julia who is learning the Flute with us at My Music in Berkshire...
Q: How long have you been playing your instrument?
Only 7 months.
Q: Why did you start playing your instrument?
I heard the flute being played at church and fell in love with the sound.
Q: What do you most enjoy about playing your instrument?
It's something for myself, I love to shut myself away, just me and the flute.
Q: Do you belong to any groups or orchestras?
Q: What’s the most rewarding thing about learning a musical instrument as an adult?
Doing something for yourself, it's so rewarding learning to read music and then managing to play the notes.
Q: What’s the most challenging thing about learning a musical instrument as an adult?
I'm not very disciplined when it comes to practicing - I am very easily distracted! Annoyingly I realise that practice makes perfect!
Q: How often do you have lessons?
Every week. I need my lessons to keep giving me the enthusiasm to continue learning. I always feel pleased with myself after a lesson and think "you can do this!"
Q: What do you enjoy most about having lessons?
Vicky! You are so great - soooo patient and enthusiastic - I love it when you say I get a gold star! I decided that I would like to learn the flute back in February 2018. Something for me and something to get my brain working as I needed to learn to read the music as well as learn to play the instrument.
I'm finding it very rewarding and always feel pleased with my achievements after a lesson. Vicky is always very encouraging, understanding and very patient. I am really enjoying it!
Do you want to get started?
We offer flexible lessons, that take place in our teaching rooms at Dawkes Music in Maidenhead. Lessons are scheduled between 9.30-5.30pm. Our pupils usually come weekly as we find this enables better progress, although some do some every other week and for more specialist queries and pro players they come every so often.
We hope you enjoy reading these pupil interviews and it might encourage you to take the leap into "giving it a go". All our teachers are professional, love what they do and have a passion for making music.
